Iran urges UN to promote peace in Afghanistan

TEHRAN, Nov. 20 (MNA) – Deputy Foreign Minister for International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araghchi urged the UN to play a more crucial role in resolving the crises in Afghanistan and to promote peace and reconciliation process in the country.

Araghchi made the remarks in a meeting with the Special Representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Tadamichi Yamamoto, on Monday in Tehran.

The two sides examined the latest developments in Afghanistan, and Yamamoto, while explaining the security situation in the country, emphasized the need for international cooperation to advance peace and security in Afghanistan.

Referring to the important role of neighboring countries in resolving the problems of Afghanistan, Araghchi expressed Iran’s willingness to help in this regard and urged the UN to play a more crucial role in resolving the crises in Afghanistan and to promote peace and reconciliation process in the country.

Tadamichi Yamamoto arrived in Iran on Monday to hold talks with senior officials over the crises and latest developments in Afghanistan.

He also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and discussed efforts by Iran and the Afghan national unity government to establish stability in the war-ravaged country.
